Experiment 4

Experiment 4
Cabinets of Curiosity: Palimpsests, Navigation and Becoming.

Part of Edwina’s remit was to explore how Grizedale’s sited art works might be revealed and disseminated though an archive. It investigated what happens when someone who is already lost attempts to explore Terra Incognita (an unexplored region). Why do we have an impulse to preserve? Why create an archive – who wants to explore it? How might they want to engage with an archive in the Internet age?

This experiment explored the canon surrounding the archive. It also investigated how artists fuse their practice with various archiving processes and might become artist-archivists or hybridic practitioners.
Using the 1502 Cantino World Chart as its starting point – one of the last world maps showing Terra Incognita. The presentation involves a world tour over 2 millennia which includes Borges Library of Babel; Wunderkammer, the Herbarium at the Botanic gardens, Kew, contemporary UK art archives, and Cabinets of Curiosities.
